Anthony and June Tucci's Rose Garden

June Tucci, 1962
(Page 10, Portland, Maine, Press Herald, Saturday, June 30, 1962 )
Mrs. Anthony Tucci starts to fill a basket full of blossoms to bring indoors. She is cutting blooms from the Comtesse de Murinais (1843), a damask moss varity with double white, highly scented flowers. The canes of the tall, thorny shrub, which reach a height of 12 feet, are pegged down in graceful patterns. The bush at the left in the picture is known popularly as the peppermint rose, probably because of the connotation of its proper name, Variagata di Bologna, Mrs. Tucci says. It has a double white bloom, streaked with crimson. The bush, 14 feet tall, has been trained over a lattice work trellis by the back door.

To An Old Rose

Where rings the rose
In round, round petals,
Pearls the bells
Of Sleepy Sunday towns
Maine hides its treasure
Of old ships stores
Roses rich in lore of mother ground.
Church bells on a Sunday morning,
Ships bells on a foggy coast,
Maine keeps a certain heritage hidden
In a pink and fragrant English ghost

-- June Tucci, MRS member, 1962
