Maine Rose Society Minutes of 11/13/05 Annual Business MeetingThe Barron Center, Portland, Maine Prepared by Deb Rumery, Secretary Present: Members – Kay Buffum, Soren Christensen, Jerry Cinnamon, Charlee Curtis, Sherman Curtis, Margaret Edwards, Joan Gotlibson, Roger Gotlibson, Claire Homan, Sari Hou, Babs Murdock, Clarence Rhodes, Deborah Rumery President Jerry Cinnamon opened the meeting at 1:15 p.m.
Old business: As a wrap-up of 2005 activities, Jerry requested summary reports from committee chairs. Treasurer’s Report: Claire Homan reported the Society’s balance as of 10/10/05, thought possibly to be the largest ever. Plant Sale: Joan Gotlibson reported that the sale of approx. 300 plants well very well, people were happy with plant quality, and acknowledged everyone’s hard work. Rose Exhibition: On behalf of committee chair Vaughn Hardesty, Deb Rumery reported the event was a disappointment, due largely to the extreme heat, lack of visitors, and set-up. Flower Show: At the invitation of Jerry Cinnamon on behalf of Chair Steve Law, Charlee Curtis noted this year’s event was less impressive than in past years and our location in the exhibition hall was poor. Hospitality: Chair Margaret Edwards reported that last month’s annual Founder Day’s meeting went well and acknowledged all the food contributions brought to monthly meetings. Consulting Rosarians: Chair Clarence Rhodes noted that he has completed the annual report and sent it to the national CR coordinator. We had four reports from our local society and the report will appear in the Yankee District’s newsletter. New Business: Committee Elections and Assignments: The following assignments were discussed and made: 1 RoseBowl - Deb Rumery will continue as editor and will aggressively seek contributions. 2 Webmaster – Sari Hou will continue in this most critical position. 3 Plant Sale – Joan Gotlibson agreed to continue as Chair. She noted she’s still seeking own-root suppliers and welcomes ideas. 4 District Consulting Rosarian Rep. – Clarence Rhodes will continue and has ideas for further expanding these opportunities. 5 Rose Show/Exhibit – Jerry put this committee on hold pending further discussion on the need/desire for this event. 6 Publicity – Deb will continue with support across the membership. 7 Hospitality – Margaret Edwards agreed to continue. 8 New members – Babs Murdock and Sari Hou will co-chair this new committee, formed to oversee continued development of new members. Jerry also noted that the Yankee District will be hosting a Consulting Rosarian school in March, which he is organizing and directing. He hasn’t given up on hosting a school in Maine or New Hampshire. Election of Officers and Directors: The following nominations and elections were held. All officers were elected unanimously. 1 President – Joan Gotlibson (According to Society by-laws, effective at end of meeting) 2 Vice President – Deb Rumery 3 Treasurer – Claire Homan 4 Secretary – Jerry Cinnamon Nominations of Advisory Board Members: The following were made and appointed: 1 Kay was renominated to another term, which will end in 2008. 2 Jerry will assume Steve Law’s position in one of the two ex-president positions. Other current Board Members are: Roger Gotlibson (completing third year in 2006), Charlee Sherman (2007) and Margaret Edwards. The Holiday party and brown-bag auction will take place Saturday, December 10, at Parker’s Restaurant in Portland. Margaret will forward directions to Sari to distribute. Lunches may be ordered off the menu. Soren Christensen will again grace the auctioneer’s podium. Members are reminded to bring an item or two valued at not more than $10, sealed in a brown paper bag, with the dollar value written on the bottom. Everyone agreed last year’s party and auction was a great time. 2. Jerry briefly previewed the 2006 Events calendar and the following action items: · March Flower Show: Jerry will talk with Steve about Mid-Maine’s plans. · Plant Sale: Clarence will check with Tanya Heskett of Master Gardener’s. · Rose Garden Tour: Jerry/Sari, Soren, Clarence, and Joan offered their gardens. · Rose Exhibit: Deb will contact O’Donal’s re their interest. The official meeting adjourned at approximately 2:30 p.m. During refreshments, Clarence exhibited the results of his leaf-mulching process along with a sample of a cane borer discovered while pruning his bushes for winter. He also exhibited a pruned “Mellow Yellow” bush in one of his signature containers.
