MAINE ROSE SOCIETY GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING Sunday, March 11, 2001 The Barron Center 1:00 p.m. Portland, Maine Minutes Officers Present: President Frank O’Connor, , Secretary Wilma Sarna, Treasurer Claire Homan, Board Members, Merle Bacastow, Margaret Edwards, Joan Gotlibson, Wendy Kemp Officers Absent: Vice President Vaughn Hardesty, Board Member Ralph Carpenter, Steve Law The meeting was brought to order by President O’Connor and the guest speaker was introduced. President O’Connor introduced the guest speaker, Steve Palmer from Plainview Farms of North Yarmouth. Mr. Palmer explained that Plainview Farm originally specialized in hosta (over 300 varieties) and shade loving perennials, then branched out to sun-loving perennials, dwarf conifers, conservation plants and roses. He presented slides of plants of various colors and heights, which he felt might compliment the colors and structure of roses, stressing that companion planting to roses depends on the gardener’s need to access the area around his/her roses and personal preferences. In closing, Mr. Palmer invited everyone to tour Plainview Farm after its spring opening on April 1. Clarence Rhodes distributed copies of the Yankee District, Roses in Review Report to ARS which he coordinated. The report lists the rose variety, type, number of reports received, number of plants in the study, winter hardiness, garden rate, disease and mildew sensitivity, height and fragrance. A second section listed the comments of each of the contributors. The report will be included in the ARS report in the April/May issue of American Rose. Clarence was complimented on his article on potted roses in a recent issue of American Rose. A sign-up sheet for volunteers at the Portland Flower Show was passed around. Tonya Heskett and Deborah Rumery will furnish refreshments for the next meeting. The next meeting will be held on Sunday, April 8, activity TBA.
