MRS Meeting Report: Feb. 9, 2005

 

Draft Minutes of January 9, 2005 Meeting of the Maine Rose Society

The Barron Center, Portland, Maine

Present: Kay Buffum, Jerry Cinnamon, Charlee Curtis, Sherman Curtis, Margaret Edwards, Joan Gotlibson, Roger Gotlibson, Brenda Peterson, Clarence Rhodes, Deborah Rumery, Aurelia Scott, Marion Stevens

 

President Jerry Cinnamon called the meeting to order at 1:10 p.m.

 

Margaret Edwards, on behalf of Treasurer Claire Homan, announced that 2005 dues are due, that MRS past-president John Robinson had passed away, and that as agreed at a previous meeting the Pierson Trophy had been sent to Pat Cullen. Jerry will call Claire to confirm past practices for contributions made on behalf of deceased society presidents.

 

Old Business

 

Treasurer’s Report: Jerry distributed the Treasurer’s Report prepared by Claire. The gross revenue from the May 2004 rose and soil sale and the December party were reported.

 

2005 Plant Sale: Per Committee Chair Joan Gotlibson 300 plants are on order for the sale, which is tentatively set for May 21 pending confirmation with the Master Gardeners. The Morden delivery will be to Clarence Rhodes’s house; the Roseland order will be delivered to the Petersons. Joan will be picking up the Young’s order. Clarence will contact Tonya Heskett of Master Gardeners to verify date and our continued arrangement. Jerry requested that Joan meet with her committee offline re pricing of plants.

 

2005 Programming: Planning for 2005 meetings continued:

 

·        February 13 Meeting:  Joan will present a program on growing roses from seeds.

·        March Meetings/Events:  (1) MMRS will host a roundtable discussion on March 5 from 1:30 to 3:30 at Longfellow’s Greenhouse in Manchester. (2) 2005 Portland Flower Show: Jerry Cinnamon will contact Ben Kirkland re collaborating with Mid-Maine Rose Society (MMRS), sharing booth space, etc.  The show begins with set-up on Wed., March 9 and continues through Sun., March 13.  By Jerry’s appointment, Sari Hou will again serve as show sign-up coordinator.  (3) The Yankee District will hold its spring meeting March 18-20 in Waltham, MA. Jerry will be a featured speaker.

·        April Meeting: Suzy Verrier was proposed as a potential speaker. Charlee Curtis will contact Suzy to determine her interest and availability.

·        June Show/Exhibit:  Following discussion, the decision on whether to hold this event was postponed.  Deb Rumery will contact O’Donal’s Nursery to explore a possible meeting/show/demonstration at their nursery.

·        Summer Garden Tours: The idea of an Old Garden Rose Tour as proposed by Soren Christensen was briefly discussed then postponed until both Soren and Vaughn Hardesty are present.  A July 10 Garden Tour of the Peterson’s, the Cinnamon’s, and Clarence’s gardens was tentatively scheduled.

·        August 14 Meeting:  Possibilities discussed included another garden tour, a social event, or garden talk, possibly by someone from outside the MRS. TBD. Jerry will contact Mike Lowe re the date and time of his annual open house.

·        September 11 Meeting:  “Six-Pack Rose Tour” at Clarence’s garden, provided the date doesn’t conflict with the Yankee District Meeting.

·        October 9 Founder’s Day Meeting:  Margaret Edwards will investigate locations other than Verrillo’s, preferably the Yankee Grill in South Portland.

·        November 13 Annual Business Meeting

·        December 13 Holiday Social Event/Brown Bag Auction

 

Deb requested that the subject of trophies be revisited at the next meeting. She will follow-up with Vaughn re trophies in storage with Ralph Carpenter.

 

Minutes of the November meeting were unanimously approved.

 

Aurelia and Marion will bring refreshments to the next meeting.
