MAINE ROSE SOCIETY GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING Sunday, January 7, 2001 The Barron Center 1:05 p.m. Portland, Maine Minutes Officers Present: President Frank O’Connor, Vice President Vaughn Hardesty, Secretary Wilma Sarna, Treasurer Claire Homan, Board Members Merle Bacastow, Margaret Edwards, Joan Gotlibson, Wendy Kemp, Steve Law Officers Absent: Board Member Ralph Carpenter Treasurer Claire Homan distributed a summary of the 2000 budget to all members present. The Rose Purchasing Committee distributed a list of roses that have been ordered for the Rose Sale in May. The meeting was brought to order by President O’Connor who asked Dr. Bacastow to introduce his friend and the guest speaker, Dr. Rick Churchill. Dr. Churchill is Associate Editor of People, Places and Plants magazine. The subject of Dr. Churchill’s talk was “Soil is Never a Dirty Word”. He spoke about the make-up of soil, how to increase organic material in the soil and how plants are believed to take up minerals from the soil. The hour passed too quickly and Dr. Churchill was thanked and invited to return at another time. Pres. O’Connor announced that a Board of Director’s meeting will be held on Wednesday, January 17, 2001 at 6:00 p.m. at the Barron Center. Vaughn Hardesty, on behalf of all the MRS. presented a plaque of appreciation to Steve and Elaine Law for their years of hard work and dedication to the Society. Larry McMahon asked members to look over the list of ordered roses and to consider buying spring roses from MRC at our Annual Sale.
