Present: Jerry Cinnamon, Clarence Rhodes, Marion Stevens, Kay Buffum, Sari Hou, Joan Gotlibson, Roger Gotlibson, Vaughn Hardesty, Ed Bergen, Claire Homan, Margaret Edwards, Deb Rumery President Jerry Cinnamon opened the meeting at 1:05 p.m. Vaughn Hardesty moved to accept the minutes of the January meeting and Sari Hou seconded the motion. The minutes were approved by unanimous vote. Jerry requested reports on the various committees. Treasurer’s Report: Claire Homan reported that approximately 60% of membership dues are in. She has also paid the fee for our annual insurance to the ARS. The ARS in turn will provide a certificate of insurance for the upcoming Flower Show. Rose Demonstration Report: Vaughan Hardesty reported that he has not received any response from the Maine Mall to his inquiries. He raised the possibility of holding this event at the pavilion in Portland’s Deering Oaks and will explore the logistics. Flower Show Report: Jerry Cinnamon reported briefly on behalf of Committee Chairman Steve Law. Steve/Jerry asked for member sign-ups to staff the MRS booth throughout the show. The sign-up sheet was circulated and Sari will also post to the website. Publicity Report: Deb Rumery reported that she has submitted an item on the May plant sale to People, Places & Plants for their calendar. She is nearly finished compiling a list of media contacts to publicize monthly meetings. Hospitality Committee: Hospitality Chairperson Margaret Edwards will tap members each month for refreshments. Sari and Deb will provide for March meeting. Plant Sale Report: Chairperson Joan Gotlibson brought the advertising flyers she had printed to have available at the Flower Show. Clarence brought a sample sign made by Visionary Signs that can be used both this year as well as in the future. A brief discussion about the availability and quality of MRS handouts at the both the Flower Show and Plant Sale followed. Joan, Sari and Deb will work together to review this. Sari agreed to make sure membership applications and the list of monthly meetings would be available. New Business: Clarence noted that the September meeting is in conflict with the Yankee District Rose Show. Joan asked whether members would be interested in having MRS hats and t-shirts printed. Meeting Program ARS consulting rosarians Clarence Rhodes and Jerry Cinnamon gave a brief, informative talk on the history and responsibilities of consulting rosarians, the need for more consulting rosarians in the MRS, the procedure for becoming a consulting rosarian, and why they have enjoyed their experiences as consulting rosarians. Jerry Cinnamon led the group through an educational, interactive program on soil composition and its relationship to water and watering techniques that included hands-on experiments with clay minerals performed by teams consisting of Clarence and Marion, and Joan and Sari.
