Old Business

2005 Plant Sale: Committee Chair Joan Gotlibson reported that the Morden order should be confirmed by the week of February 21.  Orders from Roseland and Youngs are confirmed.  Fifteen bushes have been pre-sold through Brenda Peterson’s recent presentation to her garden club.  Clarence Rhodes reported that the Master Gardeners are interested in working with us again; they will be voting on it at their February 14 meeting.  Deb Rumery reported that we will include Wayne Peterson’s suggestion of promoting the sale through direct mail to other garden clubs.  Vaughn Hardesty suggested we also target landscapers.  Sari Hou will be post the order form and descriptive list prepared by Brenda on the website.

June Demo/Exhibit:  Vaughn Hardesty agreed to serve as Chair of this function with assistance from Deb and others.  Deb will contact O’Donal’s Nursery again regarding their interest.

Flower Show:  Jerry Cinnamon reported that MRS will again share a booth area with Mid-Maine Rose Society at the March flower show.  The sign-up sheet for staffing the booth was distributed.  This year we will be located with other non-profits in a separate building from the exhibits. Cost to participate is $150.

March Program:  Jerry reminded everyone that the Mid-Maine Rose Society will be holding a roundtable discussion on Saturday, March 5, at Longfellow’s Greenhouse in Manchester. All MRS members are invited and encouraged to attend.

Hospitality:  Joan and Kay will provide refreshments for our April meeting. Margaret thanked all those who brought aluminum ring tabs for the Ronald McDonald House and asked people to continue to do so.

Program: Following the short business meeting, Joan Gotlibson presented a terrific educational program on growing roses from seeds.  Joan held the group captive with her hands-on demonstration, beginning with how to harvest seeds from rose hips (in this case using seeds from a Griffin Buck rose), and then clean and stratify them, plant them, and care for the seedlings.  Joan’s expertise in this area, supplemented with excellent hand-outs, was obvious for all to witness.  Some lucky members went home with her seedlings.

The meeting adjourned at approximately 2:40 p.m.
