Deborah Rumery, Wilma Sarna, Marion Stevens The business meeting opened at 1:00 p.m. Jerry Cinnamon requested the group consider a “rule by exception” acceptance of future meeting minutes that would allow the previous meeting’s minutes to stand as prepared unless something required a correction. The group approved, and the March minutes were thus approved. Committee
Reports Treasurer: Claire Homan reported the
current MRS balance. Total
Society expenses for March, including mailings and postage for meeting notices and the RoseBowl, name tags, copying for flower show handouts, purchase of a table versus rental, and other small expenses was
approx. $375.00. Plant Sale: Our roses are slated for an
estimated 4/27 arrival at Clarence Rhodes’s house, reported Committee Chair
Joan Gotlibson. A date for the pruning party will be determined following their
delivery. In an effort to save the
Society money, Clarence presented a handmade waterproof sign to promote the
sale in place of purchasing new signs, which the group approved. Jerry acknowledged that the Society also now
has a handmade embroidered quilted banner, which was on display, thanks to the
talent and hard work of Charlee Curtis, and Sari read the accompanying note
from Charlee. The Society can use this banner at all future MRS events. Rose Demonstration: Chair Vaughn Hardesty
reported that this event is now scheduled for Saturday, June 26, 2004 at
Broadway Gardens. Proposed hours are 11
a.m. to 3 p.m. Vaughn will be meeting
with Phil Roberts of BG sometime in May to firm up plans. The event will feature cuts roses grown and
exhibited by members. A discussion
ensued regarding the need for an attractive, informative display for the
public. Sari Hou volunteered to help Vaughn with signage. Vaughn will assemble
a small committee, and he will also contact Ralph Carpenter regarding our
vases. Broadway Gardens will donate publicity through their newsletter. Hospitality: Chairperson Margaret
Edwards announced she was looking for a few good men to provide refreshments
for next month’s meeting. Stepping up
to the plate were Ed Bergen, our Flower Show pinch hitter, and Jerry Cinnamon,
who will be working without Sari’s
assistance. New Business Nametag Etiquette: Sari distributed new, permanent four-color nametags bearing the ARS logo to all present members. At future meetings, members not wearing these attractive nametags will be required to pay 25 cents for the privilege of wearing a write-in “Hello, My Name Is” stick-on label. Meeting Program: Getting
Ready for Spring Planting Clarence started the program with an overview of the four types of pesticides (herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, and miticides) and their respective uses. A roundtable discussion followed regarding the effective yet responsible use of chemicals and their organic alternatives in the garden. Master Gardener Ruth Norton volunteered to bring the section on organic pest control from the MG manual to our next meeting. Vaughn also will update that portion of our website. Jerry explained the scientific definition and testing methodology of “lethal dosage.” The group discussed the new ARS-endorsed product “Messenger,” and agreed that a more in-depth program on pesticides would be useful. The how’s, why’s and when’s of spring pruning followed, including a live demonstration by Clarence with an accommodating Midas Touch rosebush. The meeting adjourned at 3:00 p.m. ![]() All Rights Reserved. Last Updated: April 12, 2004 by Sari Hou |
