Laurie Lane, September 27, 2005

One of our volunteers was recently in New Hampshire and Maine on vacation. Sandy noticed a flower along the shoreline beaches and was told it was called a sea rose. She described it as looking like a hollyhock but with a fairly large berry. Is it really a rose, is it native to the New England coastline. Thank you - from Western NY

Hi Laurie,

The flower your friend saw was a Rosa Rugosa, and are indeed a rose. They are also called beach roses. They are available thru various mail order sources for roses, you may even find them around your area in nurseries. We do have lots of them along the beaches here. The berry is a rose hip, they can be used in making tea, and are full of vitamin C.

Here is a link for you:

These roses are very hardy, and very fragrant.

Happy roses to you,

Congratulations, You've just met Rosa Rugosa, a native of Japan and Koreas' coasts. They naturalize in New Englands' coasts as well.

This family of roses has so much going for it:1. gorgeous hips for jelly. 2. Deer despise them, hence a good natural deer control fence for apple orchards, roses, etc. 3. Great hybrids like Hansa, Blanc Double de Coubert. 4. fragrance to die for.

I could go on forever.

Look up Rosa Rugosa Rubra (red) and Rosa Rugosa Blanc ( white), the original species versions and get hooked!

Rosingly yours Gary O'Neil
