Christine,

Climbing roses do not need to be prune if there is no dead wood. You can deadhead them however, which is the process of taking off dead blooms to encourage reblooming. You also need to train a climbing rose to the shape that you want. Often that means cutting off the new canes that are away from the climbing structure.unless you plan to pin them to the climbing structure. If you have room bend the shoots over so that the cane is horizontal. This will encourage new young shoots to form on the top of the horizontal cane. I attached a quick drawing of what I mean. Be sure to fertilize them to get regrowth of new flowers. The Maine Rose Society web page at http://www.mainerosesociety.com has much information about roses.
