You've got Black Spot. Florida is both hot and humid. Black Spot is fairly easy to treat with a tri-agent like Ortho's Orthenex "rosepride" If you like roses more than Florida, MOVE. Sincerely Gary O'Neil

Hello,

Thanks for your email. Sounds like you have tough growing conditions! We live in Maine but experienced similar growing conditions because of the trees that shade our garden and keep the ground wet. We have lovely moss too! Unfortunately, the only real solution is to move the roses to an area with less shade so that they can dry out. We recently cut a number of trees above our garden and it made a world of difference. Black spot is encouraged by the wet conditions, so while you can treat it you cannot get rid of it.

I've just learned about this last year. "Bark" is called "cork cambium". It's the inner layer of rose stem "bursting" out to create a hardened opening for air exchange into the stem. It's a natural occurrence but I suspect it occurs sooner on stressed plants. A rose that gets plenty of water and moisture may get all the air it needs through the water.

However, if the "bark" she is referring to is thin and pealing off, it would be something different entirely. That I don't know much about - yet.

The blackspot on roses: When my Mom was living in FL., whenever there was ANY problem with her roses, she would spray them with Raid and it would take care of what ever the problem was. It was the same Raid she used for bugs anywhere, inside the house or out. Apparently, Raid makes a spray for a combination of leaf diseases and insects. The RAID she used was in a BLUE can. This year, I'm going looking for my own can of Raid.
