I came upon several what appeared to be wild roses on a recent visit to Maine. Their conformation was similar to a "cabbage" or "heirloom" rose. Would you please direct me to a comprehensive site to Maine's wild roses? Christine |
| 2/18/06 Christine, The usual rose that is observed in Maine and fits your description is the species rose Rosa Rugosa that many call the Beach Rose since it has naturalized along the coast line where it is salt tolerant. Other species or naturalized roses include R. Carolina or the Pasture Rose (asian in origin but naturalized along the east coast), R. Palustis (swamp rose), R. Nitida, and the Cinnamon Rose (R. Majolis) brought in by early settlers. I do not know of a website that specificially discusses these but many descriptive rose books contains descriptions and distributions of these roses. I love seeing these plants and learning about their history and watching for them to bloom in spring and summer. I am happy to see that others do as well.
