MRS FAQs Post: February 10, 2005

Greetings -

My question is in reference to "Sea Roses". My mother, whom recent passed this August, loved what she called "Sea Roses", however when I try to find a picture to reference the Sea Rose I cannot seem to find a think. Would you happen to know the scientific name of this flower to help me with my search?

As well, is it true that there are environmental restrictions to picking these flowers?

Thank you for your help -

Eryn

Hello,

This rose's scientific name is Rosa Rugosa, a species rose.. It is often called the "Beach Rose" or "Sea Rose". The Maine Rose Society Discussion forum has many threads about this rose at http://www.mainerosesociety.com/faqs.html. These roses are generally available from nurseries either as the species tor as hybrids where they have been crossed with other roses to give different color flowers, sizes, etc. Rosa Rugosa is hardy, does not like to be sprayed with chemicals, does not need much in the way of fertilizer, and is tolerant of salt.

The flowers are always on land owned by someone, either a public or private person or entity. As with all property that is owned, you need to know what these people, parks, etc. want to have done with their property before you can assume that you are free to take it.

Hope this helps.
