HELP!!I purchased a Rugosa Rose plant 2 years ago when a friend was in Maine.I really love thes Roses EXCEPT i cannot get it to bloom in Ohio.Do I need 2 of them for polination? Or am i not doing something correctly? Thanks for any help

| 8/22/06 Jerry, This is a puzzle! The Rugosa does not require a pollinator to bloom. Now for a few questions. Does the plant get sunshine or is it in the shade. Most roses require 6 to 8 hours of sunshine a day to bloom so if it is shaded too much you probably need to transplant it. If the answer is not that simple I suggest that you contact an Ohio Rosarian. You can find a list of cyber consulting rosarians at http://www.ars.org/Crs/cr_by_area.htm, and a complete listing at http://www.ars.org/Crs/dist-buckeye.htm. Perhaps one of these individuals lives near you and can visit your garden to help out. Hope that this helps.

| 8/27/06 thanks for the reply. It does not get morning sun. it gets sun from about 2:00 pm till dusk. and it really is a slow grower. it has about doubled in 2 years(maybe 3). that is just in height, not width. very little growth in the width of the rose. should i cut it back at the end of the season? i have not done that since i planted it. my thoughts on that was that i saw them growing by the ocean and i'm sure that people don't go around and cut them back at the end of the year....but i could be wrong! thanks again,

Rugosas can be cut back and should regrow with new vigor although this should not be required, as you indicate. Is this plant a Rugosa Species (the beach rose or Rosa Rugosa) or one of many hybrids? There are many hybrid rugosas that have different growth habits than the species. You can check on www.helpmefind.com (http://www.helpmefind.com/rose/roses.php?tab=1&rbSearchNmTyp=2&searchNm=rosa+rugosa+&sbSearch=SEARCH) for Rosa Rugosa or R. Rugosa and the many species. A few rugosa hybrids are not all that hardy, such as Sarah Van Fleet, and may not do well in a spot exposed to wind. Again, I hope that this helps.
