Denise DiMarzio, April 12, 2005

Dear Friends,

I have a two-foot wide grassy strip in front of my home in RI. I'd like to plant a row of roses, but am wondering if I should get hedge roses or shrub roses. What is the difference? "Simplicity" is one variety I was looking at. Thank you.

Hello Denise,

A shrub rose is a category used to classify roses that do not neatly fit into other categories such as Hybrid Tea, Old Garden Rose, Climbing Rose, etc. A hedge is an object in the garden but not a category of classification - people do use it informally. Simplicity, I believe, is a zone 5 plant and should work well in Rhode Island. There are many others however. You might want to check out http://rirs.org which is the home of the Rhode Island Rose Society for further information. Jerry Cinnamon
