Deering Oaks Rose Circle: AARS Public Garden
The Rose Circle is one of 134 rose gardens in the United States that the American Rose Society (ARS) allows to previews its "All American Rose Selections." The groundwork for the AARS designation resulted from a chance remark made by William L. Homan in 1972 at the annual convention of the American Rose Society at Winston-Salem, N.C. He was a former MRS president and one of the founders of the Maine Rose Society. AARS was organized to test new rose varieties and recommend to the public the outstanding ones for planting.
Deering Oaks Rose Circle came into being in 1938. It was the outgrowth of a flower circle fist planted there in 1930.
The garden features 600 rose bushes. This includes Caribbean (1994), Secret (1994), Crimson Bouquet (2000), Opening Night (1996), Glowing Peace (2001), Memorial Day (2004), Day Breaker (2004), Knock Out (1999), Cherry Parfait (2001), Olympiad, Gemini, Mellow Yellow, Eureka, Iceberg, Betty Boop (1999), Honey Perfume (2004), Carefree Delight, Whisper (2003), Fragrant Cloud....etc.
